In the online "Free Movement / Movement in the Moment" workshop led by artist Dila Yumurtacı, the focus will be on the relationship between movement and feelings through somatic methods, awareness techniques, meditation, yoga, and contemporary dance.
The new guest of the Whispers of the Future series is Dila Yumurtacı. The artist, who states that she does not consider performance art separate from life, incorporates as much experience as possible into her own artistic practice. Yumurtacı, who moves away from mere observation and invites participation, shares her thoughts on performance art and our mental constructions of the future.
We talked with Dila Yumurtacı, who has been teaching various age groups in classical, contemporary, creative dance, and improvisation for over ten years at French schools, about her ongoing performance "Anicca" and her completed performance "Ouroboros," which she performed as part of Stay LIVE At Home.
Recognizing the importance of art in social life and education, and placing great emphasis on cultural activities, Galeri 5, supported by Anel Group, will host artist Dila Yumurtacı's solo exhibition 'Now and Here' until September 28, 2018.
While its roots trace back to the anarchist performances of the Dada movement in the early 20th century, the surrealist and futurist performances of the 1920s and 30s, and even Jackson Pollock's action painting, performance art as we know it emerged in the 1960s. It gained widespread popularity and continued in the 70s, aligning with conceptual art that prioritized ideas. Rejecting societal norms and aiming to engage the audience actively, performance art continues today with its online versions, adapting to the times. Typically comprising three questions, my pop-up interview series expanded to seven questions this time, resulting in a detailed dossier on our performance art.
In her first solo exhibition "Now and Here," a Yumurtacı explores the relationships between time, body, and mind through the dichotomies of inside/outside, body/non-body, flowing/stationary, and conscious/unconscious. Observing the body in motion is a method frequently employed by the dance-rooted artist. This method, which can be defined as bodily awareness, involves directing attention to the movement within the body rather than just watching and examining its aesthetic appearance.
Dila Yumurtacı's performance "Dough" received great interest!
On March 27, Dila Yumurtacı presented a performance titled "Dough" at the Contemporary Art Project exhibition held at Studios Çukurcuma in Istanbul. The artist describes her work as follows: "Dough is a performance I created based on the Turkish idiom 'Don't meddle in a man's job with dough in your hands,' which limits a woman's place in social life."
This year, the Mardin Biennial met its visitors on May 20th with the theme "The Promise of Grass." The apartment building at number 52 in Kadıköy's Yeldeğirmeni neighborhood, believed to have housed German engineers during the construction of Haydarpaşa Train Station in the early 20th century, presents a project aiming to unite the fragmented contemporary art scene by offering a different alternative to Istanbul's cultural and artistic life.
